When an industry leader speaks out his/her opinion on a particular topic, it always helps the cause much more than when normal people, bloggers, journalists, and others raise their voices. The same is true for the topic of legalisation of sports betting in India which has been debated for ages now but has been gaining some rapid pace in recent months and years.
It was only last month that one of India’s most popular digital series Inside Edge Season 3 was released on Amazon Prime Video and they heavily advocated the cause of legalised sports betting while more recently, we covered how Parimatch India also batted for the same matter, talking about the advantages of legalising sports betting in India, which you can read about here.
Yesterday, we heard of former Indian batsman and Head Coach of the Indian cricket team, Ravi Shastri, who also spoke for the need of legalising sports betting in India. One of the most stylish and well-spoken man in Indian cricket over the decades, it’s the first time he’s spoken on this matter, saying that it’s a good opportunity for the Indians government to earn from an additional source of revenue.
Not just that, it’s also a way they can keep a tab on illegal and foul practices that are currently taking place in the game, at all levels. In 2018, the Law Commission of India had initially recommended the legalisation of regulated betting and gambling activities in sports, only to make a quick u-turn and go back on its recommendation soon later. However, we’re still close to legalisation in India than ever before.

Speaking at the recent e-Adda event, Shastri was asked about his views and he said that he’d be in favour of legalisation. In terms of generating revenues and tax wise, this would be a huge support to the government, is what he said. He also mentioned that the more the authorities try to curb betting, the more it’ll happen. Hence, it might as well be regulated.
Ravi Shastri on betting legalisation
“I think it will generate tremendous revenue for the government. Tax-wise, it’s the way of the world at the moment. The more you try to shut it down, the more it will be in your face through alternate channels. I think it’s extremely important that it should be legalized in a proper way and it’s a good platform for things to be done officially and properly,” Shastri said on the topic.
We at Read Scoops are also very strongly in favour of legalising sports betting in India, with regulations in place. As it is, real money gaming is booming in the country and we don’t think it’ll be too long before sports betting is included in the list of regulated activities. Even USA took the route of legalisation in May 2018, and India may well be soon to follow.
