It’s been a super long first class history for Madhya Pradesh, first having made their Ranji Trophy debut in the 1950-51 season. And in these seven odd decades of playing the tournament ever year, they only managed to make two finals, one in the 1999/00 season and now the second time in the recently concluded Ranji Trophy 2021/22.
They don’t have the best of squads as compared to some other known teams and they’ve still managed to make two finals, losing the first one a couple of decades ago but creating history today as they beat Mumbai in the 2021/22 Ranji Trophy final and secured their maiden Ranji Trophy title, in this historic game at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Madhya Pradesh win maiden Ranji Trophy title
When Mumbai won the toss and opted to bat first, we thought half the game was over right there. The Mumbai squad is full of big names with a few even having represented teams in the IPL and getting national side call-ups as well. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prithvi Shaw put up 87 for the first wicket and eventually, Mumbai posted 374 runs in their 1st innings.
No one would’ve expected Madhya Pradesh to match that effort and get a similar score but they surprised everyone and crossed our expectations. They had three centurions (Yash Dubey, Rajat Patidar, Shubham Sharma) in their top four batsmen and ended with a score of 536 which included a hefty 1st innings lead of 162.
Many experts believed that Mumbai had the firepower to turn around this lead and push for a win on the fifth and final day of the game but it wasn’t to be. They scored at a good rate that was needed, but they lost as many as 8 wickets in the first session of the day itself, and that was like the final nail in the coffin. It allowed Madhya Pradesh to think of not only a win by FIL (first innings lead) but also an outright win.

In the 1nd innings, Suved Parkar scored a fifty for Mumbai but it wasn’t enough. Eventually, Mumbai put up 269 in their 2nd innings and set Madhya Pradesh 108 to create history and win their first Ranji Trophy title. The latter had two full sessions to get there and it was a walk in the park for them. All they needed was one session as they won by 6 wickets and put their names down in Ranji Trophy history!
The winning runs came in the 30th over of the 2nd innings with captain Aditya Shrivastava and Rajat Patidar out there to hit the winning runs. The crowd was heard chanting “RCB, RCB” each time the now local hero Patidar scored a run. We at Read Scoops wish the entire MP team and management a hearty congratulations for this title!
Madhya Pradesh have defeated 41 times champion Mumbai to win their maiden title in Ranji Trophy history. Chandrakant Pandit has done it for MP, what a moment. pic.twitter.com/6Oo1qmCbJ8

An important thing to note was that Chandrakant Pandit played a massive role in MP getting this success in their 2021/22 Ranji Trophy campaign. He captained MP to their only other final in the 1999 season and here he is again, this time as coach. They didn’t lose a single game this season without any big names on the team sheet, and they truly deserve this victory!
This is for Chandrakant Pandit, he was in tears when Madhya Pradesh lost in the 1999 Ranji Trophy final as a captain and 23 years later, he won the Ranji Trophy title for his state team as a coach. pic.twitter.com/l9GlEpjGof
