When you look at the result of last night’s 2018 Mzansi Super League game, you’ll believe it was a was a very one-sided game. It indeed was. However, those who watched it will know what a spectacle it was, with Jozi Stars giving the fans everything you want to see in a classic T20 match of cricket.
They started decently but followed it up with absolute bludgeoning of the cricket ball by Rassie van der Dussen and Australia’s Daniel Christian, which was the latter getting a record fifty in just 18 balls while Dussen narrowly missed out on a well-deserved century, together putting up a record unbeaten stand of 118* runs for the 4th wicket.
Just to put things into perspective for you, the Tshwane Spartans’ bowlers were taken to the cleaners as 140+ runs were scored in the back-end 10 overs, with Jozi Stars ending with the highest team total in the Mzansi Super League history (albeit still in its first season), amassing 239/3 in their 20 overs.
Now you couldn’t just rule the Tshwane Spartans out of the game just like that, with batsmen like AB de Villiers and Eoin Morgan in the side. However, with such a massive score put up on the board, the chase begins with loads of pressure, which the Spartans couldn’t cope with yesterday. Also, de Villiers heading back to the dugout for a duck is never a good sign.
Eventually, Spartans were bowled out for 138 but not before we saw another spectacular performance by a Jozi Stars player – Nono Pongolo. Now many of you may not know this 29-year old South African, but he’s one who is enjoying the limelight at the moment, just 5 days ago securing victory for his team when he smashed two sixes off the last two balls to take Jozi Stars home.
Last night too, he secured what became the best ever figures in any T20 played at the Wanderers cricket ground, bowling 6/20 in his 4 overs. Even though he did brilliantly on the day, the Man of the Match award was presented to van der Dussen for getting Jozi Stars to such a high score in the first place.
