The Indian Premier League (IPL) has grown leaps and bounds over the years and along with this growth, it has made heroes of the top batsmen and bowlers in the country and of overseas players as well. Yes, some players do exceptionally well in one single season but then fizzle off in the years to come. However, those who shine consistently over time go down in the record books as one of the best in IPL history.
Top 10 most IPL fifties list
We often speak about some of the best batsmen in IPL history and even have a list of the top run scorers in the IPL. Today however, we’re going to talk about the IPL most IPL fifties list (updated as of 6th May 2023) over the years. It’s good to see that these players are all super consistent, all have 4,000+ career IPL runs and all except one have at least one IPL century to their name each.
Batsman | Matches | Fifties | 50+ scores | Career span |
David Warner | 171 | 59 | 63 | 2009-2023 |
Virat Kohli | 232 | 49 | 54 | 2008-2023 |
Shikhar Dhawan | 213 | 49 | 51 | 2008-2023 |
Rohit Sharma | 237 | 41 | 43 | 2008-2023 |
AB de Villiers | 187 | 40 | 42 | 2008-2021 |
Suresh Raina | 205 | 39 | 40 | 2008-2021 |
Gautam Gambhir | 154 | 36 | 37 | 2008-2018 |
KL Rahul | 118 | 33 | 37 | 2013-2023 |
Chris Gayle | 142 | 31 | 36 | 2009-2021 |
Ajinkya Rahane | 167 | 30 | 32 | 2008-2023 |
At the top of this list is none other than Australian southpaw David Warner who has turned out to be a cult icon in the Indian premier League over the years. Having played fewer matches than the rest of the players on the IPL fifties list, Warner has still managed to put together as many as 59 IPL fifties in less than 180 matches in this competition, while also having the most 50+ scores (63).
It’s great to see more than one overseas player on this list with the likes of AB de Villiers an Chris Gayle also featuring on the IPL most fifties list. However, they’re both retired from the game now and we may see them slip from this list in te next couple of IPL seasons. They have 42 and 36 scores of fifty and more respectively in this competition.

Being important names in the Indian cricketing setup, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have both played 230+ matches in their respective IPL careers, so it’s no surprise to see them on this list. However, a special mention needs to be made for Punjab Kings captain KL Rahul who has played the least number of games on this list (118 after making his debut in IPL 2013), but still has as many as 33 IPL fifties.
Coming back to Warner, he’s played the least number of career IPL matches from everyone in the top 5 of this list, and he has 4 IPL centuries to go with his fifties as well. He scores a fifty in less than every three games with a conversion ratio of 2.71 games per every fifty in the competition. Those to narrowly miss this list include Faf du Plessis, Robin Uthappa, Shane Watson, and MS Dhoni.
