The annual list of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) contracts was released yesterday, with four players receiving the A+ grade contracts – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja joined them in that list. There were a few promotions and demotions within the grades A-C as well, with the biggest news being that of KL Rahul being downgraded to B grade.
However, there were quite a few players who completely lost their annual contracts, and that’s what making noise as well. Shikhar Dhawan hasn’t been playing highest level cricket for India since a while now, but he managed to hold on to his C-grade contract. Let’s take a look at those who lost their contracts from the last list coming out in 2022…
Which players lost BCCI contracts in 2023?
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha, Mayank Agarwal, and Hanuma Vihari have all lost their BCCI annual contracts and while some of these were expected, we didn’t see a few coming. For example, it’s been a long while since Ishant, Rahanae, and Saha were a part of the Team India setup, and we saw this coming from miles.
In fact, we have reason to believe that all three’s respective careers in the longest format are now over, and it’s not too long before they announce retirement as well. On the other hand, Hanuma Vihari lost his contract though he’s in the prime of his career and has been travelling with Team India in the 5-day format of late.

The biggest surprise was that of Bhuvneshwar Kumar as he’s been an important part of the Indian T20I setup, and he’s going to be in the news once more after IPL 2023 begins. He’s got a great IPL record and that’s been one of the major reasons he’s always considered for the T20I games as well. Alas, with good pace bowling reserves now in store, Bhuvi will have to fight for his place in the side.
Deepak Chahar is one of the biggest upcoming talents to have lost a place in the BCCI contracts list. This is primarily because he’s been injured and out of action for a very long time now. It doesn’t have much to do with poor performances, but just that he’s not been maintaining his fitness and has spent more time away than time spent on the pitch.
We’re expecting the likes of Vihari and Chahar to get their contracts back in 2024 but as for the rest on this list, it’s almost the end of the road for them when it comes to Team India contracts. KS Bharat who only featured in a few Tests for India also managed to keep a Grade C contract.
