Cricket lovers would’ve woken up to the most unfortunate news this morning as the 2021 New Zealand tour of Pakistan was called off a couple of hours ago due to an apparent security alert. Everyone was super excited about this historic tour as it meant New Zealand touring this country after 18 long years, last having done so way back in 2002, which was also cancelled due to a bomb scare.
Very unfortunate indeed, as there were 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is scheduled on this tour and it has been ‘postponed’ which basically means cancelled indefinitely due to this security concern. As per reports we’ve received, the New Zealand Board was informed about a security risk and despite the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ensuring them they were covered in this department, the former has decided to pull out.
It was only a year or two ago that international cricket teams started touring Pakistan again after the shooting that took place on the Sri Lankan bus in Pakistan in 2009. Since then, cricket boards have not been very willing to tour Pakistan and now that a few have agreed, this is a major setback indeed. BLACKCAPS posted on Twitter to inform their fans about the same. “The BLACKCAPS are abandoning their tour of Pakistan following a New Zealand government security alert. Arrangements are now being made for the team’s departure,” said the tweet which caused a number of international cricketers and stakeholders of the game to react with their messages. The PCB Twitter account was also quick to reply to this tweet, with their assurances.
“Earlier today, the New Zealand cricket board informed us that they had been alerted to some security alert and have unilaterally decided to postpone the series. PCB and Govt of Pakistan made fool proof security arrangements for all visiting teams. We have assured the NZ cricket board of the same. The Prime Minister spoke personally to the Prime Minister of New Zealand and informed her that we have one of the best Intelligence systems in the world and that no security threat of any kind exists for the visiting team,” they said.
PCB is willing to continue the scheduled matches. However, cricket lovers in Pakistan and around the world will be disappointed by this last minute withdrawal. 4/4
