Everyone loves a little sporting crossover and today, we saw one between cricket and tennis in Australia. Currently, two major sporting events are taking place down under, including the 2024-25 Big Bash League (cricket) and the Australian Open 2025 (tennis), the latter being the first tennis grand slam of the year.
For those who don’t know, today was the Melbourne Derby at BBL 2024-25 where the Melbourne Stars took on Melbourne Renegades. Not too far away, the Australian Open takes place at Melbourne too, and we saw a tennis legend in attendance at the cricket, someone who has a record-breaking 24 grand slams at an individual capacity.
Novak Djokovic at Big Bash League
We’re talking about none other than Serbia’s tennis legend, Novak Djokovic. No one has more grand slam single titles than him in the world, while he also has a great love affair with Australia as well. At the Australian Open, he has a record 10 grand slam singles titles, once again higher than anyone else in the world.
Stoinis goes straight, very high, but not long enough and he’s caught on the rope!

In this video above, you’ll see Marcus Stoinis of the Stars launch one ball straight into the air, being caught on the boundary after the ball hung in the air for ages. It looked like a brilliant shot and everyone was shocked, including Djokovic, who was filed watching in awe at a balcony seat in the ground. See the video above for his priceless reaction to the Stoinis wicket.

Servia traditionally hasn’t been known to be a cricketing nation, so we don’t know how much of knowledge Djokovic has about the sport. However, he’s nice and relaxed about his Round 1 game, as most other players who be stressed and training ahead of their game. Djokovic will take on USA’s Nishesh Basavareddy in his first game tomorrow.

The BBL 14 game he attended was taking place at the Marvel Stadium which creates one of the best cricketing atmospheres in the country, so Djokovic picked the right game to attend. For the first time in years, we’ve seen Djokovic seeded as low as #7 for Australian Open 2025, but we think he’s still got it in him to go deep into the men’s singles event.
