Someone who has been a very loyal servant to Australian cricket over the last decade, off-spinner Nathan Lyon has gone on to reach a very special milestone today. It’s not very often over the decades that we’ve seen an Australian offie do well at the highest level but Lyon has proved himself each and every year, now 10 years since his Test debut for the Australian national side in 2011.
He is picked only to play the longest format for Australia and when he last played Test cricket, it was a special moment for him as he celebrated his 100th Test match. It was the 2020/21 India tour of Australia and in the final Test of the series, he only managed to pick 3 wickets against Indians who are good players of spin. Not getting enough wickets means he was left stranded on 399 career wickets!
Now, almost a year later, he got the chance to search for that 400th wicket again and it took him time to get there. If his 100th Test was a special milestone, his 101st Test was also special as he went on to pick up his 400th Test wicket. And what a better way to get it, in the 1st Test of the Ashes 2021/22 series against England, in front of a jubilant crowd at The Gabba, which has been Australia’s fortress over the decades.

The 34-year old has joined a very special club now, becoming only the 17th bowler in the history of Test cricket to reach 400 career scalps. And among current cricketers, only James Anderson (632 wickets), Stuart Broad (524 wickets) and Ravi Ashwin (427 wickets) are ahead of him now. A good series here and he could very well jump a few more spots on this elite list of most Test wickets.
Among Australian countrymen, only two others have reached this milestone before Lyon, one being Shane Warne (708 wickets) and the other being pacer Glenn McGrath (563 wickets). These are all very legendary names and Lyon will be very grateful to have reached this landmark in his career. Our guess is that he has a few more years in the bank and we could very well see him get to 500+ as well!
Coming to the wicket, it was Day 4 of the 1st Ashes 2021/22 Test and Lyon got to the landmark by dismissing England’s Dawid Malan for 82, bat-pad and caught at silly mid-off. England crumbled to 147 all out and conceded a massive 1st innings deficit, and Lyon first struck only in the 2nd innings.
The series is always going to be exciting and has got off to a great start. If you’re interested in Ashes 2021/22 betting, click here. For more updates on Ashes 2021/22 and other cricket news from around the world, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com…
