In case you didn’t know as yet, the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2021 is currently underway in Southampton, England. For the first time in the 144-year history of Test cricket, we’ve had a global final and the action is live between India and New Zealand as we speak. Right through the WTC Final 2021, the broadcast staff has been running us through some of the greatest test players of the 21st Century.
Yesterday, there was the reveal for the Greatest Test Batsman of the 21st Century and we saw Sachin Tendulkar pipping Kumar Sangakkara to win the award, based on the Star Sports jury. Today, during the lunch break on Day 3 of the WTC Final 2021, we had the reveal for the ‘Greatest Test Bowler of the 21st Century‘. After the nominees were revealed, the winner was announced by Sunil Gavaskar live on air.
Stars Sports had nominated the best four bowlers in this category and they were – Dale Steyn, Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan. The anchors in the studio announced that McGrath took fourth place and one of the world’s best spinners, Warne ended in third place. Finishing second was Steyn and the Sri Lanka spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan won the award.

The Star Sports jury included some iconic former cricketers like Harbhajan Singh, Ian Bishop, Gautam Gambhir, Shane Watson, Scott Styris, Sunil Gavaskar and others. It also included a number of top-notch sports journalists and we believe, Murali was the most deserving person for this Test bowling award.
Right through his career, Muralitharan bagged 800 Test wickets and retired from the game in 2010. More than 500 of those wickets came in the 21st Century, so the award is very much justified. While Steyn had the #1 test bowling spot on the ICC Rankings for 263 continuous weeks, Muralitharan had more than 50% of the votes in the polls.
