A young and visibly overwhelmed Stuart Christopher Broad hit the scene at the age of only 20 years and at that time, no one knew he was going to become one of the most celebrated cricketers in English cricket history. 17 years after making his debut for England in white ball cricket, Broad decided to step away a few days after his 37th birthday, hanging up his boots across all formats.
The entire stadium was up in applause after Broad scripted the best story for himself, picking up the final two wickets in the 5th Test of Ashes 2023 against Australia. He wanted to end on a high and he did so, playing the final 5 games in what was the best and most entertaining Ashes series we’ve seen in many, many years. Here, we’re looking at some of the best moments of Stuart Broad’s international career…
1) Facing off against Yuvraj Singh
You can’t think of Stuart Broad without associating him to the Yuvraj Singh six sixes which came in the 2007 T20 World Cup against India. Singh was involved in a verbal spat with Andrew Flintoff and Broad paid the price for it, as he came in to bowl the next over and was hit all over the park for six consecutive sixes. Yuvraj registered the fastest fifty in T20I cricket as well (12 balls) after getting 36 runs in that over!
2) Many years later, Jasprit Bumrah
He was 21 when bowling to Yuvraj but may years later in 2022, the now celebrated and multiple-record holder bowler faced ff against an unlikely opponent in Jasprit Bumrah, the latter smashing him for 35 runs in a single over, off which 29 runs came from Bumrah’s bat. 4, 5Wd, 7Nb, 4, 4, 4, 6, 1. is what the over looked like as Broad went on to hold the record for the most expensive over in Test history, beating James Anderson’s 28 runs in an Ashes match in 2013.
3) 169 at Lord’s
Broad is used to putting his name up on the bowling honour’s board but little would he have expected to be on the batting honour’s board with his only Test century coming in the 4th Test of the 2010 Pakistan tour of England. He didn’t just swing is bat but he helped bring England out of trouble from 102/7 to a formidable position to win the match by an innings and 225 runs, which included a record 332-run stand with Jonathan Trott. His 169 is the second highest score in Test cricket at number #9, following Ian Smith’s 173 in 1990. Broad ended his career with 1 century and 13 fifties in Test cricket.

4) 8/15 vs Australia in 2015
It’s the 2015 Australia tour of England and Ireland and Broad was in action once again, tearing apart the Australian batting lineup. Broad is an Ashes man and he ended with the most wickets in Ashes cricket history (149 scalps), and it’s days like these that helped him climb that summit. Mark Wood and Steven Finn were the only other two bowlers used, with 9 overs and 2 wickets among them as Broad picked up his Test best of 8/15 in a fiery spell of 9.3 overs, which included Chris Rogers and Shaun Marsh for ducks, as Australia was bundled out for 60!
5) Bails magic in final Test
This is not something you see every day but in his final Test, Broad went and exchanged the bails on the stumps, only to get the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne on the very next ball. In the 2nd innings and before what turned out to be the second last wicket of his Test career, Broad repeated the trick and lightning struck twice as he got Todd Murphy caught behind on the very next ball. Freaky but this is true, and it’s one of the best scripts written in international cricket.
