The Indian Premier League (IPL) has grown to become much bigger than every other T20 franchise league across the world and that’s mostly because of the amount of money pumped into the tournament over the years. And now in order to help grow leagues in other parts of the world as well, the IPL team owners are buying chunks of franchise teams in other leagues as well.
Shahrukh Khan was the first to do it with the Knight Riders franchise in the IPL as well as the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Now, Indian owners have extended their portfolio to the upcoming first editions of the UAE T20 League as well as the new CSA T20 League. Today, the Mumbai Indians team owners revealed their new teams in both these respective leagues…
Presenting MI Emirates and MI Cape Town
They decided to brand the portfolio as the MI Family as using the word ‘Indians’ wouldn’t be appropriate in South Africa and UAE leagues. Hence, they’ve abbreviated it to MI and added the team names after that. They’ve gone on to even use the same logo as the Mumbai Indians, something that Kolkata Knight Riders and Trinbago Knight Riders also did.
Two new social media handles were created with the launched of both these new teams also being done today, 10th August 2022. MI EmiratesΒ will participate in the UAE T20 League which has already gone on to sign a number of big names from around the world, and is set to take place sometime later this year, keeping in mind there’s the T20 World Cup as well.

On the other hand, they also launched the MI Cape Town franchise that will play in the CSA T20 League early next year, also the first edition of this tournament. Mumbai Indians have always claimed to be ‘One Family’ and they’ve continued to talk about that as they move their portfolio into South Africa and UAE. We’re sure to see similar signings and players being shared across the leagues as well, with the exception of the Indian team members as of now.

“It gives me great pleasure to welcome ‘MI Emirates’ & ‘MI Cape Town’, the newest additions to our #Onefamily. For us, MI goes beyond cricket. It embodies the ability to dream, be fearless and foster a positive attitude. I am sure the MI Emirates and MI Cape Town will embrace the same ethos and take MI’s global cricket legacy to even greater heights!” said Nita Ambani, Director at Reliance Industries.

The global expansion of #OneFamily may see the rise of two very successful teams because Mumbai Indians is already one of the most loved franchises in the world. Given the same identity and team values, we could very well see these two new franchises grow across the world now. The UAE league is being known as the International League T20.
