We all know what an amazing talent Mayank Agarwal is and how heavily he’s been scoring at the top of the order, both for Punjab Kings as well as Team India whenever given the opportunity. Having played for this franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) right since the IPL 2018 season and scoring well each year, he was one of the front-runners to be appointed captain for IPL 2022.
They were in need of a captain because their former captain KL Rahul was released from the squad after the IPL 2021 season, upon request. Rahul was then picked up by Lucknow Super Giants wo will be making their debut in IPL 2022, which means Punjab Kings was without a captain. And rather than choosing one from the list of new signings, they decided to appoint a leader from the retention list.
Mayank Agarwal to captain Punjab
We think it’s a fair decision to make the 31-year old leader of the side because he’s experienced and has been a part of the franchise for four seasons now. He’s spent a lot of time batting and in the circles with KL Rahul which means a lot of his leadership skills would’ve rubbed off on Agarwal as well.
He has previously served as vice-captain of the team and even led the team briefly during Rahul’s absence in the last season. This then only was natural progression for the opening batsman from Karnataka and we’re happy to know that the Punjab Kings management has gone on to make a smart decision, as they’re still in search of that elusive first IPL title.

“Mayank has been an integral part of the side since 2018 and of the leadership group for the last two years. The new squad we selected at the recently concluded auction has exciting young talent and outstanding experienced players. We want to create a strong foundation for the future with Mayank at the helm. He is hardworking, enthusiastic, a team player with all the attributes required of a leader. I look forward to working with him as captain and believe that he will lead this team to a successful campaign,” said Punjab Head Coach, Anil Kumble.
Mayank will be eager to step into the shoes of captain and ever since his debut in this tournament in IPL 2011, he’s completed 100 career IPL games and has scored 2,000+ IPL runs including 11 fifties and a century as well.
