The world was brought a new cricketing competition in 2023 called the Major League Cricket (MLC) and with a number of high profile names and team owners, we knew it was going to be a super popular event on the annual cricket calendar. The first edition of the tournament was MLC 2023, scheduled between 13-30 July 2023.
The tournament had a total of 6 teams and even though MI New York had a slow start to the tournament, they went on to win several games on the trot, to be crowned the MLC 2023 champion. The tournament doesn’t have a long history but with all the international superstars linked to the event, we expect many big finals to be played in the years to come.
New York needed 184 runs to win the MLC 2023 final and after losing their first wicket for no runs on the board, MI captain Nicholas Pooran played the innings of his life, with 137(55)*, scoring both the fastest fifty as well as the fastest century of the competition. After having 5 trophies in the IPL over the years, MI opened their account in this competition too, becoming the fist MLC T20 winner.

In MLC 2024, we saw a one-sided final where Washington Freedom emerged victorious over San Francisco Unicorns, and we expect many more teams on this MLC winners list over the years. In the first season, Seattle Orcas ended up runner-up while San Francisco in MLC 2024, which means we’ve had four different teams play in the 2 MLC finals so far. And in these games, we saw batters getting the Man of the Match awards – Nicholas Pooran from West Indies and Steven Smith from Australia; no local player has won this award in an MLC final yet.
With 579 runs in only 16 games in this competition so far, Kiwi batter Devon Conway leads the run scoring charts in the Major League Cricket tournament history. Similarly with the ball, it’s another Kiwi player in Trent Boult who has the most wickets, getting 31 scalps in his 16 games so far.
