There was a massive hype around the Maharashtra Premier League (MPL T20) when it was announced to kick off in June 2023 and while there was a well-planned IPL-style MPL 2023 Auction, very few people know that this wasn’t the first edition of MPL T20 to have taken place. The tournament initially took place in 2009 before being stopped after 3 successful seasons.
In fact, organised by the Maharashtra Cricket Associated (MCA), this competition became the first ever T20 league organised by a state association, after the IPL kicked off in 2008. Now, the tournament is being revived after more than a decade, with bigger purse capacity, better players, attractive sponsorship deals, broadcasting rights, and much more. The first three MPL T20 seasons took place between 2009 to 2011-12, before being revived now so many years later. The teams are obviously much different from what they were back then, with Raigad Royals winning the inaugural MPL 2009 season, beating Pratapgad Warriors by 6 wickets in the MPL 2009 final. Harshad Khadiwale led them to success in that first MPL final so many years back!
The Raigad franchise continues to the most consistent side in MPL T20 history because they made all the three finals, losing to the Sinhagad Supremos in the MPL 2010 final and then missing out to Devgiri Emperors in the MPL 2011 final. The earlier seasons of this tournament were not very well documented as there was not a lot of media coverage, and no big players associated with the tournament either. Hence, we’re not sure of who the adjudged players of the match in each respective final were from MPL 2009 to MPL 2011-12. However, we’ve mentioned (where possible) about which players had the biggest contributions in those respective finals.
The three teams above won the title once each and they’re all the join most successful teams in MPL T20 history. Now with the league undergoing a complete revamp, we can expect a fourth team to join the list after the MPL 2023 final. All games in this season are being played at the MCA International Stadium in Pune and all games are being telecast live on DD Sports as well.
The tournament is still in its early stages but as time goes by, we’re sure it’s going to have a very rich history.
