- Name: Lucknow Super Giants
- Captain: KL Rahul
- Head Coach: Andy Flower
- Squad members: 21 players (3 from draft)
- Best result: IPL debut in 2022
- IPL 2021 result: NA
Here’s one of the two new teams that will make their Indian premier League (IPL) debut with the IPL 2022 season. We’re talking about Lucknow Super Giants that seemed to have done everything right at the IPL 2022 Auction, even though they deserve no marks at all for coming up with their franchise name. They are the same owners as the now defunct Rising Pune Super Giants franchise and copied that team name.

Since there’s no retention list for this new team, there’s the IPL 2022 Player Draft where they spent heavily to pick up three players. One of them is their new captain KL Rahul who also happens to be one of the most consistent performers in the IPL over the last 3-4 seasons. His records with the bat are second to none but his captaincy has raised several questions while at Punjab Kings. They also picked up Ravi Bishnoi and Marcus Stoinis.
Picking one batsman, one bowler and one all-rounder at the draft was the right way to begin and they continued to build that perfectly balanced team at the auction too. They weren’t afraid to spend the big bucks and showed a clear preference towards picking West Indian players, adding all of Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers, and Evin Lewis to their squad for IPL 2022. However, we think they have a little bit too much of overseas talent.

They signed Quinton de Kock as well, which means two left-handed overseas openers and very few times in the history of the IPL have we seen that take place. And they’re both too good to see either one sitting on the bench. And considering KL himself is an opener, it’s likely we see Evin warming the bench and QdK being being the first nod. As a backup Indian opener, they have Manan Vohra but he may not get a game either.
They’ve gone heavy on the all-rounders department too, with all of Mayers, Holder and Stoinis being genuine all-rounders. Additionally, they’ve picked three Indian all-rounders in Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya and Krishnappa Gowtham. Hooda recently made his Team India debut and is in better form, so I’d pick him over the other two. We hope for Manish Pandey to be given a cemented #3 position in this team because he’s never had a fixed position in his IPL career.
Now with the ball, they paid the big bucks for Avesh Khan and we understand why because he was one of the top bowlers of IPL 2021, finishing second only to Harshal Patel in the Purple Cap race. They had one overseas pacer in Mark Wood but he’s been ruled out of the IPL 2022 season with injury so they may consider picking Sri Lanka’s Dushmantha Chameera as they’re unable to get an NOC for Taskin Ahmed to join the squad.
Lucknow Super Giants – IPL 2022 Betting
As you can see, they have plenty of options with the bat and ball but we’re not sure how many of these players are genuine match winners. Add to that the fact that it’s a new franchise and will not be able to hit the ground running, they aren’t the best bet even though they’ve got some good names on paper. Regardless if you want to have some fun and bet on them to be the IPL 2022 winner, place a punt at odds of 11.0 with Betway.

Stoinis and Quinton are sure starters according to us and with Wood ruled out, we definitely think Holder is the third overseas pick, especially since he did really well for SRH in the last couple of seasons. They’ve already gone with several batting options or else we’d want Kyle Mayers to be picked and do well in his IPL debut season. However, they may go in for an added bowling resource in Dushmantha Chameera.
Lucknow Super Giants IPL 2022 squad: KL Rahul (C), Ravi Bishnoi, Marcus Stoinis, Quinton de Kock, Manish Pandey, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers, Evin Lewis, Krishnappa Gowtham, Avesh Khan, Dushmantha Chameera, Ankit Rajpoot, Shahbaz Nadeem, Manan Vohra, Mohsin Khan, Ayush Badoni, Karan Sharma, Mayank Yadav, Blessing Muzarabani.
