The much awaited announcement is finally in as we’ve got to know who the two new teams of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be. After an initial delay because of more potential bidders coming in, the bidding process was set for 25th October 2021 in Dubai, UAE. And the two new teams announced are – Lucknow and Ahmedabad.
After months of debate about whether the structure of the cash-rich league should be modified, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) finally decided that two new teams will be added to the tournament, effective from IPL 2022 onwards. Among the bidders were Avram Glazer, Adani Group, RPSG Group, Jindal Steel, Torrent Pharma, Aurobindo Pharma, Hindustan Times Media, Rhiti Sports, Ronnie Screwvala, and Ranveer Singh + Deepika Padukone.

10 parties turned up for the IPL 2022 team auction at Taj Dubai, each having picked up an initial tender of Rs.10 Lakh each. Once the bid submissions and verification were complete, the only thing pending was the announcement of the highest bidders and the two new teams, which was announced at 3pm IST! Sanjiv Goenka-led RPSG group, who has been a part of the IPL in the past in the form of owning Rising Pune Supergiant, a team that played 2 seasons of the tournament in the past. They won the bid to one of the teams for around Rs.7,000 Crore. They will be owners of the Lucknow franchise in IPL 2022, and the home ground will be the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium, with a 50,000.
CVC Capital (also known as Irelia) turned out to be the highest bidders and are the owners of the Ahmedabad franchise in IPL 2022, and they will have the newly constructed Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as their home ground. CVC has been stakeholders in Formula 1 and recently in La Liga too, and they bid approximately Rs.5,200 Crore for this team.
Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Cuttack, Dharamsala, Guwahati and Indore were the initial front-runners to win bids to be the new teams for IPL 2022.
