Today was the first day of the Legends League Cricket Masters 2023 series in Qatar, with India Maharajas taking on Asia Lions. There’s plenty of hype and anticipation around this retired cricketer’s league which is being broadcast on Star Sports in India and there was action right from the first few minutes of the first game in Doha.
With the Lions batting first, Sri Lanka’s Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan were the opening batsmen and Ashok Dinda from India was bowling the second over of the innings. Dinda ran in to Dilshan on the fourth ball of his spell and got the outside edge which carried to Robin Uthappa, who fumbled a few times before picking up a fantastic catch.

In his last few years in the Indian Premier League, Uthappa spent more time as an outfield player than as a wicket-keeper and this would’ve been a role he hasn’t been too used to in recent times. He gave away a few byes in the first over itself but he made up for that with a nice grab in the second over, to dismiss the former Sri Lankan all-rounder.
The ball went into Uthappa’s right hand, which then popped out. He tried to grab it with both hands once again, only for it to finally settle in his right glove on the third attempt, while falling down in the follow-through. To be honest, he was lucky as it would’ve looked very ugly and unprofessional for him if he ended up dropping that one.

Asia Lions won the toss and their captain Shahid Afridi decided to bat first. Uthappa is one of the players to have retired more recently, and you’d expect better fitness levels from him. Hence, dropping that would’ve raised questions on his fitness as well. Either way, we’re more excited to see him with the bat rather than behind the stumps.
When he completed this catch, Dilshan was dismissed for 5(6) and Afghanistan’s Asghar Afghan was the next one to go on the first ball of the third over, LBW to Irfan Pathan. India Maharajas made a good start to their LLC Masters 2023 series and they’ll be a favourite to go on to win today as well as this tournament too, which has 8 games on the schedule.
