When you talk about sporting events with a long history in India, you cannot leave out the Indian Premier League (IPL). Though it’s not been around since decades, it’s carved a space for itself which no other competition has been able to. In fact, we can easily say that it’s one of the best T20 franchise competitions across the world today.
And since T20 is often considered as a batsman’s game, you’ll find a lot of batsmen holding the records like runs scored, most number of games played, most sixes and much more. Bowlers don’t get enough of credit in this format and today, we are also going to talk about a batting record in this tournament, covering all the batsmen to have hit 200+ career IPL sixes.
Whenever you talk about a T20 league, there always has to be one man leading the charts in terms of most sixes and in the IPL too, it’s this same Universe Boss Chris Gayle who leads the IPL sixes count, and leads it by a long way. As of date, he’s the only player with 300+ IPL sixes and though he’s not even in the top 5 all-time IPL run scorers list, he’s still way ahead of everyone in terms of the maximums hit.

You will understand the enormity of Gayle’s six hitting record when you see that he’s also got the least number of matches played in this list of players with 200+ IPL sixes, and he’s still at the top (last updated on 7th March 2022). This list is updated before the start of IPL 2022 and Gayle’s West Indian countryman Kieron Pollard has faced the least balls among all the players on this list.

Right below Gayle on this list is AB de Villiers and it goes to show the importance of overseas players in the IPL. However, it’s unfortunate that ABD announced his retirement after a poor outing in IPL 2021 and we won’t see any more sixes from his bat. He’s likely to fall on this list in years to come but the leader Gayle may stay there for a long, long time.

We say so because none of the players who have crossed 200 IPL sixes are young anymore, and none of them have too much of cricket left in them. Even the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli who have been run machines in this tournament and have 227 and 210 sixes respectively, don’t have more than 3-4 seasons of the IPL left in them, which means no one may even be able to overtake Gayle on this list!
And while there are only eight names on this list, we expect many more to join the 200 IPL sixes club in the seasons to come. Former Australian cricketer Shane Watson narrowly missed joining the list, ending his IPL career with 190 maximums to his name. The closest to the milestone right now after these is Robin Uthappa who has 168 sixes to his name in 193 matches.
