The leading T20 franchise tournament in the country and probably even in the world, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has grown leaps and bounds and in this gentleman’s game, the batsmen have always been the bigger stars. And since we’re covering everything related to cricket and IPL records, Read Scoops is bringing to you a special list of all the past and current Orange Cap winners in IPL history!
What is the IPL Orange Cap?
For the uninitiated, the IPL Orange Cap is a special award given to the player with the most individual runs in a single tournament, presented at the end of every IPL season. During the tournament, the physical cap is distributed to batsmen as and when they take over someone else on the most runs top spot, with the player ending at the top being the eventual winner of the Orange Cap award.
When you look at our list of all Orange Cap winners in IPL history, you’ll see that the overseas players have dominated this race. The first ever winner of this award in IPL 2008 was Australia’s Shaun Marsh while another Australian won in IPL 2009 in Matthew Hayden. Over time, we saw the overseas players dominating even further, with five of the first six winners being overseas players.

Since it’s an individual award, let’s talk about individual numbers as well. Only twice in the history of the league has the eventual Orange Cap holder scored less than 600 runs in a season and still won the award. The lowest among them was in IPL 2015 when David Warner won it by scoring only 562 runs. And on the flip side, Virat Kohli was the top scorer in IPL 2016 in a record-breaking season with the bat where he got 973 runs.
We honestly don’t think that the 1,000-run barrier may be broken anytime soon but with the IPL expanding and ten teams playing as compared to eight earlier, batsmen will be playing more number of games each IPL season; it means we’ll see heavy scoring seasons in the future. Jos Buttler won the 2022 Orange Cap IPL award, becoming the first Rajasthan Royals batter to enter this all IPL Orange Cap list.
