From inception all the way back in 1984, the cricketing Asia Cup has always been one of the most fascinating tournaments taking place in the Asian continent every few years. It began in the UAE nearly four decades ago where just three teams took part and today, we have a minimum of 6 participating nations in every edition of the Asia Cup.
The tournament has almost witnessed a format change over time. While the first 12 editions of the men’s cricket Asia Cup were all played in the ODI (one day international) format, the thirteenth edition was the first time it was played in the T20 format, while Asia Cup 2022 (15th overall edition) was the second such T20-format Asia Cup to be played…
Here on this page, we’re going to list down every edition of the men’s cricket Asia Cup that has taken place right since the first tournament in 1984, including both the ODI as well as the T20 format editions. More importantly, we’re jotting down a complete Asia Cup winners list till date, updated as of 17th September 2023, after the end of Asia Cup 2023, where India beat Sri Lanka in a one-sided final. While India and Sri Lanka are the most successful teams here and Pakistan has also won the tournament on two occasions, Bangladesh would consider themselves a bit unlucky as they’ve made the Asia Cup finals on three separate occasions (2012, 2016, 2018) but are yet to taste victory and lift the Asia Cup trophy.

On the individual records front, we’ve had quite a few standout performers in this tournament over the years. Former Sri Lankan opening batsman Sanath Jayasuriya holds the record for the most number of runs (1,220 runs) while his countryman Lasith Malinga holds the record for the most number of wickets in the history of the Asia Cup (33 wickets).
Only the best players step up when it’s most important and while we have usually seen good players performing in the finals of major events, doing that on multiple occasions is truly something special. India’s Mohammad Azharuddin (1990/91, 1995) and Sri Lanka’s Marvan Atapattu (1997, 2004) are the only two players to win the Man of the Match award in two separate Asia Cup finals.
