When you get into the depths of the matter, Cricket South Africa was one of the first boards in the world to introduce a full fledged T20 franchise league. With Indian Premier League beginning in 2008, Big Bash League in 2010/11, Pakistan Super League much later in 2016, you’d think the CSA T20 Challenge is the grandfather of all these tournaments, having begun all the way back in 2004.
Unfortunately however, the tournament has picked up as well as the others have, partially due to sponsorship troubles. They’ve been called the PRO20, RamSlam T20, Mzansi T20, MiWAY T20 and more over the years. Later, it was left as the CSA T20 Challenge and on this page, we’re going to dive into the history of the tournament and all the CSA T20 winners over the years…

As of now, we’ve had 21 completed editions of the CSA T20 Challenge, last updated on 28th November 2025, and there have been some teams that have come and gone. However, they’ve almost always stuck to the 6-team format person season, where teams play a single round robin format followed by the knockouts. Titans are the most successful team in CSA T20 history, with 7 titles to their name!

We’ve updated this page just before day the CSA T20 Challenge 2025 ended. Lions began as defending champions for the last two seasons, coming into CSA T20 2025 trying to complete the hat-trick. It’s safe to say that Knights is the worst performing franchise in this league, having ZERO titles to their name and just one appearance in a CSA T20 final. Quite a few national side regulars have starred in the finals in the past CSA T20 editions but the tournament doesn’t always have an international cricket window, which means the national side players aren’t always available to play here. Sometimes, a MOM award wasn’t always given away while initially, an award was given to both the best batsman as well as the best bowler in the CSA t20 final.

The Multiply Titans have always boasted the most number of national side players and that’s why they’ve dominated this tournament over the years. And their success rate in finals is also amazing, having made nine finals and won seven of them. Another good success rate is that of Lions, having played six finals and won four of them!

Come 2023 and there was a new tournament called the Betway SA20 League that was launched, with quite a few Indian Premier League team owners participating in the league. So far, only two editions of the new and revamped South Africa regional T20 league has been played, and both have been won by the Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) franchise. PS. The SA20 League did not replace the regional CSA T20 Challenge.
