There’s been a lot of hype over the ‘Legends’ format of cricket in recent months where a bunch of retired cricketers come together to play cricket, which is as or sometimes even more entertaining than other forms of cricket. And a couple of days after LLC Masters 2023 ended in Qatar, a new tournament has begun in India, in the KhiladiX Legends Cricket Trophy 2023.
What’s surprising is that this tournament is utterly and completely brought to you by a sports betting website. Khiladi.com is one of those many sports exchange websites who are catching the public’s eye in recent weeks. They primarily came into the limelight when they signed Bollywood star Shahid Kapoor as their brand ambassador and now, they’ve got a cricketing league of their own. Not only is KhiladiX.com the title sponsor of Legends Cricket Trophy 2023, but they’ve also got branding all over the tournament.
The first edition of this tournament will see a total of 18 T20 games being played between 22-30 March 2023, where a combination of retired domestic and international cricketers will be in action. As many as six teams are playing and the captains include Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Robin Uthappa, and Virender Sehwag. All team jerseys also bear KhiladiX.com branding.

The tournament has been hosted in collaboration with the Board for Veteran Cricket in India (BVCI) and by the looks of it, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may also start considering accepting sports betting brands as their main sponsors – something they’ve been strictly against for many years now, to keep away match fixing and corruption in the game.
It’s not too often that we see franchise tournaments branded completely by one company; and it’s not like any underground tournament, as big names are associated with it too. FanCode is live streaming the tournament, the first game of the competition was scheduled at Ghaziabad, and the trophy unveiling ceremony was hosted in Delhi where Virender Sehwag was also a part of the action.
