Johan Botha’s Bat Snaps in Two in BBL 08!

Not very often to you get to see such comic incidents on a cricket field. However, the Big Bash League (BBL) isn’t called one of the world’s most entertaining cricket leagues for nothing. Today, Hobart Hurricanes hosted Brisbane Heat at the Carrara Oval, Queensland, and Johan Botha had his bat broken as soon as he walked out to bat.

Batting first, the Hurricanes were in a little bit of trouble as they were scoring at a decent rate, but they kept losing regular wickets. Johan Botha was the last man to walk out to bat at number 8, and was all set to face pace bowler Mark Steketee. Botha tried to cut it away to the offside and the ball hit the bottom of the bat, only to see one half of it flying away onto the pitch.

He had to get off the mark and he did so, to allow Simon Milenko to finish it off in the final over. BBL 08 has been a pretty exciting season so far, with just a few days since the start of the season. Today’s game saw Hurricanes putting up 159/6, where D’Arcy Short ended up top scoring with a well-made 67(52).

It was a 19-over contest and with the likes of Chris Lynn and Brendon McCullum in the Heat line-up, this was a par total. However, Heat was unable to get over the line, losing a bunch of wickets towards the back-end of their innings, getting bowled out for 144. This is their second consecutive loss this season.

The all-rounder Botha played international cricket for South Africa between 2012 and 2017 before moving to Australia to play domestic cricket. In 2016, he qualified as an Australian citizen and has been a regular feature of the Big Bash since then. He was brilliant with the ball today, ending with figures of 2/30 in his quota of 4 overs.
