A couple of years ago, Jhye Richardson shot to fame as one of the upcoming pace bowlers in Australia due to a fabulous domestic season. He immediately featured for the national side as well but the years to come didn’t do all that well for him. He battled injuries and poor form but once again, he was a person of interest coming into the IPL 2021 Auction.
This is mostly because he’s a 100% match fit right now and he’s coming off a most amazing BBL 10 season back home in Australia. Still only 24 years old, Richardson is a specialist limited overs bowler and his best records are in the T20 format itself. In the recent BBL 2020/21 season for Perth Scorchers, he was nothing short of fabulous, picking a record 27 wickets in the season!
In the IPL 2021 Auction, he had a base price of INR 1.5 Crore, one among 35 Australians to go under the hammer from the total list of 292 players. There was immediate interest from teams who still had some purse amount left. Royal Challengers Bangalore showed interest and later, they got into an intense bidding war with Punjab Kings.

Just before his name came out of the bag, there were a couple of other major bidding wars that took place, with Glenn Maxwell getting upwards of INR 14 Crore while South African bowling all-rounder Chris Morris set the day alight with an all-time IPL record of INR 16.25 Crore. Next, it was time for Richardson to show his worth to those in the room!
Eventually, it was Preity Zinta and her renamed franchise Punjab Kings who won the battle and she introduces Richardson to her team at a massive contract of INR 14 Crore. The team has suffered over the years and have never won an IPL title so maybe Jhye may help change their fortunes in the upcoming season.
