With 2 T20 World Cup titles under his leadership, Darren Sammy has been one of the most iconic names to have emerged from Windies Cricket, at least in the shortest format. He’s a loved cricketer across the globe, having played in several T20 and T10 leagues in different countries and continents. In fact, he was even offered honorary citizenship by Pakistan a few months back.
However, Sammy has been in the limelight over the last few days not for his cricketing conquests but for his claim to have been racially abused over his years at the Indian Premier League (IPL). Protests have been ongoing across the world against the new wave of racism that was sparked by the killing of George Floyd, and Sammy decided to have his say as well.

It was a few days back that Sammy said that he was called ‘Kalu’ at the IPL for many years and he just figured out the meaning of the world, which literally translates to ‘Black’. He said he was angry after having found out the meaning and now, an old social media post by former Sunrisers Hyderabad teammate Ishant Sharma has resurfaced, to support these claims.
The post is a photo with Ishant and his fast bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Dale Steyn and the Caribbean all-rounder, Sammy. The caption reads, “Me, bhuvi, kaluu and gun sunrisers.” The photo was posted to Ishant Sharma’s Instagram handle during the IPL 2014 season and now has resurfaced because of the word Kalu in it.
Now we’re all sure that this was nothing more than fun and games, and it’s being made more of an issue than required. However, the entire world is fighting against racism and it’s just a matter of this resurfacing at the wrong time. It’s been a few hours since the post cropped up again on social media and Ishant hasn’t gone ahead to delete or edit it yet. For more updates on this story, you can stay tuned to ReadScoops.com.
