The Indian Premier League (IPL) is known to be a league that has unearthed some insane cricketing talent over the last 16 years. Season on season, we’ve been seeing new stars emerge and this time won’t be any different with IPL 2024. We’re just on Day 2 today and Match 2 of IPL 2024 was between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, at a new IPL venue in Mohali.
Punjab won the toss and from there, everything went their way. They dismissed the Aussie openers (David Warner, Mitch Marsh) after a good and brisk start and from there, Delhi wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Then came the new and young superstar in 21-year old Abishek Porel who wasn’t in the original playing eleven, but was brought in as IMPACT SUB!

Delhi were in a horrible position and it seemed like a 150+ total was also going to be difficult. However, Porel’s entry into the game changed the fortunes for Delhi completely. While most of you won’t know the player, he hails from Bengal and has played 4 IPL games prior to today’s one. Today however, he arrived on the big stage in the IPL!

No one would’ve expected much from the bat of Porel because he hasn’t been known to the masses as a big hitter and honestly, he was walking out at number #9 in the Delhi Capitals batting order. To make matters worse, he was batting against Harshal Patel in the 20th over of the innings, who had picked 2/22 in his 3 overs prior to the last one.

He was batting on 7 runs in 4 deliveries going into the final over and he smashed the 12-Crore bowler Harshal Patel for 3 fours and 2 sixes on both sides of the wicket. 4, 6, 4, 4, 6 were the results of the first five balls of the innings, only managing a single on the final ball, which was a yorker from Harshal. Porel ended his innings at 32(10)* with a stunning strike rate of 320 and he marked his attendance at IPL 2024, and for the Delhi franchise. He took them up to a respectable score of 174/9 in their 20 overs, which we think is below par, but it’s still competitive. He came in and did his job, doing exactly what the Impact Player rule was created for from IPL 2023 onwards.
