Today’s Special Saturday in IPL 2023 included an RR vs DC game in the first of the day’s double header. And the home side got off to a rocking and truly rollicking start with as many as 8 boundaries in their first two overs of the innings itself. And while doing so, they knocked off a few new records in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history.
Firstly, we’ve not really seen it before where a team has scored all of their first 32 runs with boundaries – no singles, doubles, extras, or any other runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed 5 fours of the first over against Khaleel Ahmed and captain Jos Buttler followed it up with 3 fours in the second over off the bowling of pacer Anrich Nortje.
IPL 2023 – RR create new batting records
While we saw them score all of their first 32 runs by boundaries, the franchise also recorded their highest score in the first 2 overs, in their 15-year IPL history. Finally, a single came on the second ball of the third over, bringing a sense of normalcy to this game, which was IPL 2023 Match 11 being played in Guwahati.
This onslaught also included another record which was the most expensive over of IPL 2023 so far, as he creamed Khaleel for 4, 4, 4, 0, 4, 4 – missing only one ball from that first over. In fact, he gets the record for the joint fourth highest opening over in IPL history, only behind Prithvi Shaw (24 runs), Sunil Narine (21 runs), and Naman Ojha (21 runs).

We’ve known about Yashasvi’s talent for a long time now and he seems better than ever in IPL 2023 so far, smashing a fifty in the opening game of the league itself. Today, he and Buttler brought up the 50-run opening partnership within 4 overs itself, and things are looking ominous for the Delhi side early in the game today. He then went on to smash three consecutive boundaries once more, this time in the 5th over which was bowled by Axar Patel. It’s not too often that someone like Jos Buttler gets overshadowed but that’s exactly what the talent of Jaiswal has done today so far. At the time of typing this, RR was 63/0 in 5 overs, including Jaiswal being 40(18)*.
