Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Rajasthan Royals was IPL 2023 Match 4 and both of these two teams respective first games of the season. Rajasthan batted first and thanks to fifties from Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler, they put up the first 200+ score of the season. And while everyone spoke about the SRH batting lineup and their chances to chase it down, they were shocked in the first over of the chase.
New Zealand’s Trent Boult came out and delivered a double wicket maiden, getting both of Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi for ducks each, setting back the Sunrisers by a long way. And the second wicket to fall, that of Tripathi’s, we witnessed a stunning catch from the big West Indian Jason Holder, who helped take SRH to 0/2, taking a brilliant catch at first slip.
IPL 2023 – Jason Holder catch at slip
He used all of his big wingspan at slip to pull off a stunner, because it came to him at a really quick pace too. Boult bowls really fast and this was some great reflexes on display by Holder, stretching his left-hand and grabbing it at a widely positioned slip. It was an outswinger from Boult, and Tripathi just guided it down to the big West Indian, who flew to his left to complete the catch.
Tripathi refused to go anywhere, as he believed it was a bump ball, as we saw happen with Shimron Hetmyer in the first innings. And despite all his confidence, it was reviewed and given out – pretty clearly too. Finally then, the RR teammates could celebrate with Holder, who picked the catch of IPL 2023, though we’re still pretty early in the season so far.

Cricbuzz commentators called it ‘One of the moments of the IPL season already’ and we don’t disagree. Holder has always been an underrated player but he manages to contribute in more than one ways, which was evident with this catch here. Holder was then later brought in to the bowling attack in the 4th over of the innings, playing against his former franchise, SRH.
