While teams are allowed to maintain most of their squads before any season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a complete revamp has to happen during a mega auction (once in three years) and that’s what happened before the IPL 2022 season as well. Teams had to go back to the drawing board and build a squad from scratch once again, and that’s why we love this tournament so much.
One of the ten teams in participation this year is Rajasthan Royals and apart from that first victory all the way back in the inaugural season in IPL 2008, they’ve never made any other IPL final till date. The team has always boasted of some of the biggest buys in an IPL auction like Ben Stokes, Chris Morris, Shane Watson, Jaydev Unadkat and others, but they’ve still failed to impress.
Rajasthan Royals before IPL 2022 Auction
This year, they went ahead and retained only three players ahead of the IPL 2022 Auction and funnily, they retained all three batting options. One was their captain Sanju Samson who they stuck with despite the fact that he’s never lived up to full potential over the years. The other players they decided to retain were U-19 fame Yashasvi Jaiswal and England international, Jos Buttler.
Now all three are opening batsman options and they went on to make matters even more complicated for themselves by buying southpaw Devdutt Padikkal who was RCB’s leading run scorer last season, which means Jaiswal is sure to be sidelined in the first-choice eleven. And they’ve got a few selection dilemmas in the middle order too now, purchasing Karun Nair, Rassie van der Dussen and Shimron Hetmyer.

Let’s not forget that they also have Daryl Mitchell who they got at the IPL 2022 Auction which means four overseas batters who are potential top order picks, considering Mitchell opened the batting for New Zealand in the 2021 T20 World Cup. But while the batting has to answer quite a few questions, they’re bowling seems to be one that will ask quite a few questions, strong in the pace department especially.
A loyal servant for Mumbai over the years, they’ve got Trent Boult added to the squad while Nathan Coulter-Nile and Obed McCoy are other overseas pacers who may not be first-choice. Prasidh Krishna now has international experience and will be high on confidence while they’ve added both of India’s leading spinners to their squad in Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravi Ashwin, who will be great bowling in tandem.
