Everyone’s been very excited about the IPL 2022 season because of multiple reasons. We had the mega auction which means fresh squads, and it’s also the first time ever that a single IPL season will be contested among ten different franchise teams. And of course, the format would be different from the usual 56 T20 games that we’ve been used to seeing in the double round robin format before the IPL Playoffs.
Now with 10 teams in place, the competition may end up getting a bit too long if the double round robin format continued, so the BCCI announced a few changes in the format leading up to IPL 2022. The biggest headline from these new format rules is that all the ten teams wil continue to play only 14 league matches each like they used to in the earlier format as well.
New IPL 2022 format
So what this rule does is that it doesn’t allow an unfair advantage to batters and bowlers competing for the Orange and Purple Cap. In the past, the winners all played 14 league games at the most and if the number of games increased, past records are bound to be broken. Additionally, the IPL usually gets a window of no international cricket from most other boards, so increasing that window may cause issues.
The next rule that has surprised one and all is the fact that the IPL 2022 season will also be the first time ever that the tournament will be broken up into two groups. The groups will consist of five teams each and all teams will play 5 teams twice and 4 teams just once, so as to keep to the limit of 14 league stage games for all.

IPL 2022 Groups
Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants make Group A of the IPL 2022 season while the teams that will be a part of Group B include while Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans.
It’s also the first time ever that the IPL has used a seeding system to determine the groups, based on the number of championships won and the number of finals appearances over the years. Obviously then, the two new franchises (Gujarat and Lucknow) become the lowest seeded players in the Tata IPL 2022 tournament.
Each team will play the other teams in their group two times each, while they will also play the team in the same row as them twice. Example: Mumbai Indians will not only play KKR, RR, DC and LSG twice but they will also play CSK twice. Additionally, they will play the other group members once each. With the most number of IPL titles to their name, Mumbai is the highest seeded team in the draw.
However, the top 4 teams will be qualifying for the IPL 2022 Playoffs as per the IPL Points Table like previously. There won’t be two different points tables group wise in IPL 2022.
