Two powerhouses of the Indian Premier League, it’s always fun when Mumbai Indians takes on Kolkata Knight Riders. One a 5-time IPL champion and the other having won the title twice in the past, there’s exciting cricket taking place every time these two take on each other. Their latest encounter was this evening in Match 14 of IPL 2022 and once again, there were fireworks.
On a relatively slow pitch where top order batsmen were finding it difficult to play their shots, a lower order batter came out and smashed the ball to every part of the ground, breaking plenty records in the bargain. We’re talking about Australia’s Pat Cummins who has been one of KKR’s most expensive player in recent IPL seasons, and we definitely see the reason why!
IPL 2022 – Pat Cummins hits 35-run over
Chasing only 162 to win, KKR was losing regular wickets and Mumbai were in the driver’s seat when Cummins came out to bat. However, he completely changed the game, turning it on it head and breaking some personal records while doing so. In the bargain, he brought up the joint fastest fifty in the history of the IPL over the years.
Top order batsman KL Rahul held the earlier record of scoring a fifty in just 14 balls, when he did so against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2018. No particularly known for his batting, Cummins hit 4 fours and 6 sixes in his innings of 56(15)* which means almost all of his runs came from boundaries. Yusuf Pathan and Sunil Narine have 15-ball fifties as well in the IPL.

Cummins played this innings and scored 56 runs of the 61-run partnership as well. It came at a time when KKR were unlikely to go on and complete the run chase as well. And while doing so, the bulk of his runs came in the 16th over against countryman Daniel Sams. He hit him for 35 runs in that over which went on to become another IPL record.
Of course, this is a record that Sams wouldn’t want to hold as he was hit for the most expensive over of IPL 2022 and the second most expensive over in IPL history as well. Prasanth Parameswaran holds the joint record for the most expensive IPL over, when he gave 37 runs in an over against RCB in IPL 2011, playing for the now defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala.
This was then repeated more recently in IPL 2021 when RCB’s Harshal Patel gave away 37 runs in a single over against Chennai Super Kings, even though he ended as the Purple Cap winner that season. In one ball in Sams over, Suryakumar Yadav completed a great catch on the boundary (on a no ball) which means Cummins only got two runs instead of six, or else it would’ve been an even more expensive over!
