Every year, there’s an auction that takes place where teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) can pick up new players, based on how much each franchise is willing to pay for those players. And the IPL 2022 Auction was a particularly big event because it was a mega auction which means more money to be spent and of course, more players to go under the hammer at the auction.
At this IPL 2022 mega auction, one of the first teams to come close to exhaustion of their auction purse was 2-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders and this was because they went after all the top players in the auction. They may have not got all but got quite a few, which means they’re heavy on big names and also have the most number of lesser known local players, who may warm the bench in IPL 2022.

T20 is said to be a game where all-rounders will have the biggest roles to play and that’s why KKR went on to retain four players ahead of the IPL 2022 Auction, with three of those being all-rounders. We’re talking about the West Indians Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, and India’s Venkatesh Iyer who only rose to fame in IPL 2021 but his stocks would’ve risen after last year, also making his national debut since then.
KKR was one of the first teams to make a big splash at the 2022 IPL Auction when they signed Shreyas Iyer for a package in excess of ₹12 Crore. The franchise let go of Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan after IPL 2021 which means they were in search of a captain, and they may have found that in this man, who has also been one of the most consistent scorers for Delhi Capitals over the last few years.

But before we go ahead and talk about the rest of their squad, let us tell that they weren’t happy with the all-rounders they had. They wanted more so picked up Nitish Rana once again, who is a top order batter that always gives you the option for a few overs. They also bought back bowling all-rounder Pat Cummins at half the price they paid for him at the IPL 2021 Auction, so that was a victory for them too.
Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi is another all-round option but with age catching up with him and poor form of late, he may not get many games. Varun Chakravarthy was the fourth retention and apart from him and Narine, they don’t have many spin bowling options. In the pace department, they signed Tim Southee to assist Cummins and among the Indian pacers, there’s Umesh Yadav along with Shivam Mavi!
