After Mumbai Indians, there’s only one other team to have won three or more titles in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). In fact, they are even the defending champions in this tournament going into IPL 2022. You can call them a bunch of oldies and make fun of them saying they’re the ‘Dad’s Army’ but guess what?! The experience counts and has been working for them in the IPL.
We’re talking about the Men in Yellow Chennai Super Kings who find a way to always bring out the best in their players, be that someone aging or someone totally out of form or someone with absolutely little or no experience at the highest level. And they’ve built a very similar team once again, staying true to the strategy they’ve used for 14 years in the IPL so far.

One of the biggest decisions was retaining MS Dhoni and paying a hefty fee for him because we don’t think he’ll play more than one more season, and he may even retire halfway through the IPL 2022 season. Others on the retention list for them were Ruturaj Gaikwad, Moeen Ali, and Ravindra Jadeja. Now Jadeja has matured as a cricketer and from a bits and pieces player, he’s evolved into a genuine all-round option.
Moeen has also prospered under the leadership of MSD and is a floater who can bat anywhere in the batting order, while giving a few important overs too. Ruturaj was the Orange Cap winner in IPL 2021 and knowing his talent, you can expect the runs to keep flowing as he got three consecutive hundreds in the 2021 Vijay Hazare Trophy too.

At the IPL 2022 Auction, they bought back many players from last season including Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa, Deepak Chahar, and Dwayne Bravo. The notables to be left out include Lungi Ngidi, Faf du Plessis, and Josh Hazlewood. To cover for Faf, Robin Uthappa may bat up the order with Ruturaj as that’s where the former plays his best game; he showed promise in the few games he played in IPL 2021.
And if they want to stick with the overseas batter position, there’s always Devon Conway who has been a run machine in international cricket since his debut and is likely to make his IPL debut this season. They ave Shivam Dube to add some power in the middle order while they’ve covered for Tahir, Hazlewood and Ngidi by picking up the likes of Chris Jordan and Dwaine Pretorius as their overseas pacers.
