Every three years, there’s a complete revamp in squads at the Indian Premier League (IPL), and that’s why the IPL 2022 Mega Auction has been such a hyped event over the last few weeks. Finally, it’s here and some of the best players from both India as well as overseas have begun going under the hammer in this 2-day event.
Players were put in different categories based on their minimum/base price and there were 49 players in the highest base price category of ₹2 Crore. Among them was Maharashtra bowler Shardul Thakur who has gone on to play a lot of international cricket in the last 12 months or so, and regular contributions across formats would’ve seen his stocks rising ahead of this IPL 2022 Auction.
Shardul Thakur goes to Delhi Capitals for IPL 2022
Considering he’s pulled India out of many holes in recent games, has been one of their golden-arm bowlers who always makes something happen, and he can play a few shots with the bat too, there was always going to be a few teams with their eyes on Thakur in the auction. And to cut a long story short, Thakur has gone on to win a massive ₹10.75 Crore contract at the auction.
Because he’s such a multi-faceted player, there was already a lot of interest in him and you added recent good performances and a 5-fer against South Africa in the Tests too, added to the attractiveness of having him in your IPL team. And after a bit of a bidding war between Delhi and Punjab, he’s going to play for the former in the IPL 2022 season and beyond.

Having made his debut in this tournament in IPL 2014 for the Kings XI Punjab, Thakur also went on to play for Rising Pune Supergiant for a single season before moving on to play four seasons for Chennai Super Kings where he was being paid a salary of ₹2.6 Crore until IPL 2021. The 30-year old is at the peak of his career and this latest contract will mark one of the best moments of his cricketing career till date!
His name came out in the fifth set of the day – that of capped fast bowlers. Had his name come out in the earlier half of the day, he probably would’ve bagged an even bigger contract but we’re sure he won’t have any complaints about this price tag either. Punjab Kings opened the bidding followed by Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals, and Chennai Super Kings coming in late but dropping out soon later.
Shardul Thakur gets ₹10.75 Crore contract
When you look at his IPL career stats so far, they aren’t the best with 67 wickets in 61 games and an economy of nearly 9 runs an over, which means he tends to leak runs. With the bat, he hasn’t even been used as a pinch hitter till date, with only 53 IPL runs over the years. But he’s high on confidence and is an impact player, which means he was looked at in a whole different light ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.
Delhi Capitals were looking for such a pacer and they filled their quota by picking Shardul, while also picking Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman soon later in the same category. They’ll be keen to explore his batting prowess as well rather than just relying on him to get wickets in the IPL 2022 season.
