It was only in October 2021 that the decision on the expansion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was finalised. For many years now, there has been the idea of increasing the number of teams from 8 to 10 and finally, the decision was made. The two new teams were Lucknow and Ahmedabad, with the highest bidders winning the rights to the teams.
There’s plenty of talk as to who will go to these two new franchises in the IPL 2022 auction which will be a mega auction and you can expect a lot of money to be spent when this event takes place. However, one sure news has come in and that’s the appointment of the head coach at the Lucknow IPL franchise, in Zimbabwe former captain and batsman, Andy Flower.
There’s no players on the Lucknow roster as yet but this is a sure pick for them. They haven’t even decided a franchise name yet, but we know who will lead them behind the scenes. One of the greatest ever Zimbabwe batsman, Andy has now got a lot of coaching experience as well, both at the international level as well as in these T20 and T10 franchise leagues.

Most recently, he finished a stint with Delhi Bulls at the 2021/22 Abu Dhabi T10 League where his team finished as runner up, losing to Deccan Gladiators in the final of the tournament. He’s got a great coaching resume now and in the IPL too, he’s been with the Punjab Kings in recent seasons.
It was only in December this year that he resigned as Punjab Kings Assistant Coach and with KL Rahul also resigning from the Punjab roster, one may think that Rahul will be the next to follow to the Lucknow franchise. But our question of the day is, will Andy Flower be the right coaching selection for Lucknow?
I mean, let’s start with his performance with Punjab Kings. Hasn’t this franchise been looked down upon because of continuous disappointments and no silverware in 14 editions of the Indian Premier League so far. And there were plenty of complaints about his time with the England national side as well, with Kevin Pietersen talking all about it in his autobiography after retirement.
