IPL 2021 – Sunrisers Hyderabad Team Preview

IPL 2021 - Sunrisers Hyderabad Team Preview

  • Name: Sunrisers Hyderabad
  • Captain: David Warner
  • Head Coach: Trevor Bayliss
  • Home Ground: Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad
  • Squad members: 25
  • Best result: Champions in IPL 2016
  • IPL 2020 result: 3rd on points table

They weren’t there since the first season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) but Sunrisers Hyderabad has been one of the most consistent IPL teams in recent years. They won in IPL 2016, finished runner-up to Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2018 and have overall made the IPL playoffs stage in all of the last 5 seasons of this tournament. Surely, they will be set to make it 6 in a row as they approach the IPL 2021 season!

There’s no team in IPL 2021 that will have an overseas selection dilemma bigger than Sunrisers. Right at the top is David Warner who has an IPL record like none other. No player has more IPL fifties than him (48) and he’s the only overseas player to have 5,000+ IPL career runs while this also includes 6 consecutive seasons with 500+ being scored. No player has had such consistency and he’s also captaining the side again in IPL 2021.

The next automatic selection becomes the spin wizard Rashid Khan who needs no introduction, with wickets in every T20 league he’s played. They have another Afghanistan spinner in Mujeeb Ur Rahman but it’s unlikely these two will bowl together as the latter has only 3 scalps in his last 10 professional games. The third overseas pick could be West Indian captain Jason Holder who got 14 wickets in only 7 games last season and he’s a floater in the batting order too.

In case Holder is injured or unavailable, Mohammad Nabi is the ideal replacement but we think the latter may not get too many games this season. Opening with Warner, we think Jonny Bairstow will walk out to the center in IPL 2021, with scores of 94 and 124 in 3 ODI innings recently in the bilateral series against India. To add to that, he’s batted well with Warner in the past and they wouldn’t want to tinker with this partnership.

This means that Bairstow could very well keep out the likes of Jason Roy and even Kane Williamson for that matter as it’s very unlikely that SRH will play 3 overseas batsmen in the top order. We think Williamson is expected to miss out on the first few games and even longer, if these two at the top keep scoring. SRH played Abdul Samad and Abhishek Sharma a couple of times each in IPL 2020 but they have a more experienced all-rounder this year in Kedar Jadhav who however, has been out of action since a while.

Since he’s been out of and was picked only for base price at the IPL 2021 Auction, we think Vijay Shankar may be the better all-round option for the side. Year after year, this lad shows potential but then just doesn’t deliver, so he needs to come back much stronger this season. With Bairstow likely to be picked in the team, we think it’ll be an extended stay on the bench for the likes of Shreevats Goswami and Wriddhiman Saha in IPL 2021.

With the ball, there wasn’t much support for Rashid in IPL 2020 but we’re expecting big things from T Natarajan who life has changed over the last 6 months and we think he’ll be one of the top wicket-taking bowlers for SRH in IPL 2021, with a bit of international experience under his belt now. Khaleel Ahmed has been having a super dry spell when it comes to wickets, so we don’t see him being a part of the playing eleven too often this year.

IPL 2021 - Sunrisers Hyderabad Team Preview - T Natarajan

There’s a young blood slot available in this side. Last year, they tried out Samad, Sharma and even Priyam Garg. The middle order is where this slot is and we think it may be an IPL debut for Virat Singh – an explosive batsman who has 2 fifties and a century in the last 10 domestic games he’s played. Sunrisers is up at pre-tournament odds of 6.50 on Funbet and we think placing a small amount here is a good way to begin your IPL betting this season.

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD IPL 2021 squad: Kane Williamson, David Warner, Manish Pandey, Priyam Garg, Abdul Samad, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed, Sandeep Sharma, Siddharth Kaul, T Natarajan, Abhishek Sharma, Shahbaz Nadeem, Vijay Shankar, Wriddhiman Saha, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Holder, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Jason Roy, Jagadeesha Suchith, Kedar Yadav, Sreevats Goswami, Basil Thampi, Virat Singh.

A strong top order followed by a bowling attack capable of defending sub-140 scores means this team is a pretty strong one indeed. They’re likely to qualify to the IPL Playoffs again but we don’t think they can go all the way. For opponents, the middle order is where the vulnerability is which means if you can get the top order cheaply, you stand a decent chance against this SRH unit.
