The difference between a Mumbai and a CSK is always going to be the consistency. Chennai qualify to the play-offs with ease each time whereas you never know what to expect from Mumbai. You can’t back them on a particular day. Their Indian batting talent means a strong foundation at the top, while one overseas batting slot opens up between Quinton de Kock and Evin Lewis. The former recently got 4 consecutive 50+ scores against Sri Lanka and is in brilliant touch.
Their team is more-or-less similar than what they had in IPL 2018, but they have added a few more experienced members to the squad. One of them is Lasith Malinga, who returns to the MI squad, this time older and not as accurate as he has been over the last decade. A poor ODI series against South Africa saw the Sri Lankan captain bagging only 4 wickets in 5 games. Kieron Pollard is also catching up in age now, and while he will begin in the playing 11 initially, we could very well see him being replaced by Ben Cutting.
Talk about age, Yuvraj Singh is also added to the Mumbai squad. While he hasn’t played a lot of cricket in recent times, Yuvi will add a lot of experience to the dugout. I don’t see him playing more than 5 matches this season, but one game-changing knock is long due. The match winners for MI this season will definitely be the Pandya brothers and the world’s best T20 bowler, Jasprit Bumrah. Need to defend 8 in the last over? Back him to do it 90% of the times!
