If you’re reading this some day much after it was the article was published, remember that all stats in this article are updated as of 4th March 2022. At the time of writing this, only twelve Indian cricketers had managed to reach 100 Tests in their careers, with Sunil Gavaskar becoming the first of the lot and former captain Virat Kohli becoming the latest to do so.

From the lot, a few just got over 100 Tests and then retired from the longest format. As for the most number of Tests, Sachin Tendulkar played 200 Tests for India and no other cricketer from around the world has even come close to playing so many games in whites. A special mention also goes out to Mohammad Azharuddin who narrowly missed this list, with his career ending at 99 Tests for India!

A majority of the names mentioned on this list are cricketers who have long retired from the game. Only the last two entrants on the list are still currently playing Test cricket for India and that’s Ishant Sharma and Virat Kohli. At the time of writing this, two Indians in the eighties with rest to career Test matches are Ajinkya Rahane and Ravi Ashwin, so they could also make the list soon.

Usually, the careers of batsmen tend to be much longer than bowlers and that’s why we haven’t seen many genuine bowlers in the list. Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh got there but with fitness always being a concern for pace bowlers, Ishant Sharma is the only fast bowler in the list to have played 100 Tests for India, while Kapil Dev used to bowl medium pace as well.
