Indian fans had to witness a heart-breaking disaster in the ODI World Cup 2023 Final match. Ten straight wins followed by a batting collapse in the all-important game and it was hard to take for the home team! However, the T20I series victory now against Australia comes as a blessing for the Indian team!
Even though the timing of the T20I series was completely irrelevant both India and Australia made good use of the series to test their strength! Only Suryakumar Yadav (stand-in captain) and Shreyas Iyer (last 3 T20Is) have featured in this series among India’s clear regulars in the upcoming T20I World Cup hosted by West Indies next year.
Coming to this series, India won both the first two games piling the pressure on the Australian team! A masterstroke century from Glenn Maxwell in the third T20I in response to Ruturaj Gaikwad’s whirlwind century in the first half gave Australia their comeback victory in this series, with Ruturaj becoming the fourth Indian T20I centurion to have scored a ton in vain.

The first three games played at Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, and Guwahati respectively, were completely dominated by the batters. The scenario has changed in the remaining two T20I matches series where bowlers put on superb displays, particularly the Indian unit. Defending under-lights totals of 174 and 160 in the 4th and 5th T20Is respectively, the home team did well even though conditions like dew do not offer support to the bowlers during this winter season in India! India won these two games by a margin of 20 runs and 6 runs respectively.
Moreover, the Indian team was mostly comprised of their stars who performed well in the IPL tournament. The openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal excelled with the bat while Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma proved their mettle with their strokeplay during the death overs. And no one can resist themselves from not praising a young wrist-spinner Ravi Bishnoi who was also the leading wicket-taker in the series!

Bishnoi even went on to claim the #1 spot in the ICC T20I bowlers rankings, becoming only the second Indian to do so after Jasprit Bumrah. The series result was in India’s favour. And they got to test their young talent in this shorter format during these 5-match T20I series! It’s been a bitter sweet last 30 days, getting a series win here but only after the heartbreak of the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
With only 6 more T20Is to be played by India before the T20I World Cup in June next year, we would like to see more and more chances for these youngsters in this format. Next on, India play South Africa and that’s their next challenge, playing all of T20s, ODIs, and Tests away from home.
