The World Cup is as big as it can get in any professional sport. While regional and franchise club level sport takes place through the year, international events are less frequent but winning a trophy in your national jersey is the pinnacle of the career of sportsmen and sportswomen. Today, we’re going to talk about the ICC T20 World Cup which was introduced in cricket back in 2007.
While the 50-over World Cup has been around since many more decades and takes place every four years, this is the newer and shorter version of the game, and the T20 World Cup takes place every two years. It’s cricket’s most entertaining format and because it’s shorter, more teams can also be accommodated. While it began with a 12-team format, the ICC T20 World Cup now has 16 participating teams.
Today we’re going to take a walk down memory lane and talk about all the winners in the history of the T20 World Cup, ever since that inaugural edition back in 2007. We’re doing so with the last update on 3rd October 2022, before the start of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, which is the eighth edition of this global T20 tournament.

India was the winner of the first ever T20 World Cup which took place in 2007 in South Africa and since then, quite a few changes have taken place in the game. India themselves only made one more final in the six editions that took place after that first one, where they lost to Sri Lanka in the 2014 T20 World Cup final. The first couple of editions were won by Asian teams (India and Pakistan) and just when we thought there’s an Asian dominance in this format, only one of the next five editions were won by an Asian team (Sri Lanka in 2014). The most successful team in this event remains the West Indies who won both their titles under the captaincy of Daren Sammy, once in 2012 and then again in 2016.
The most successful team in the 50-over format of the game over the years, Australia was very late to join the party in the 20-over format, with the 2021 T20 World Cup being their first trophy in this tournament. Now, they’ll be defending champions going into the 2022 T20 World Cup and they’ll be favourites too, considering the tournament is being played at home.
Among the individual performers, Mahela Jayawardene from Sri Lanka is the highest run scorer of the tournament (1,016 runs) and Bangladesh’s Shakib al Hasan is the leading wicket-taker (41 wickets). Only one player has been awarded the Man of the Match in two different T20 World Cup finals, that being Marlon Samuels from West Indies, winning it on both occasions in their 2012 and 2016 victories.
