Today, the team at Read Scoops tuned in to the 2022 Marsh Cup final, which was taking place between Western Australia and New South Wales. Some of the best cricketers in the country were in action in this season finale game and after batting first, Western Australia only managed to put up 225/9 in their 50 overs which was always going to be tough to defend.
However, they had the bowlers to do the job for them. They reduced NSW to 108/6 early on but Moises Henriques and Daniel Sams put together a strong 60-run partnership for the seventh wicket. And it was slowly slipping away for WA. They needed a bit of inspiration in the field and that wasn’t provided by any bowler but by Hilton Cartwright in the field.
Hilton Cartwright catch in Marsh Cup final
While Sams fell after a brilliant cameo, the main problem for WA was Moises Henriques who could win the game on his own. And right enough, he began to accelerate since NSW was 7 wickets down. And as he looked to hit D’Arcy Short straight back down the ground for six, he was greeted by a flying effort from Cartwright on the long on boundary.
Cartwright flew to his left and timed his jump perfectly, catching the ball with both hands while still being mid-air. And the catch wasn’t complete there as he had to ensure the ball didn’t pop out on landing and even worse, he had to make sure the momentum of his run didn’t take him over the boundary ropes. But guess what?! He completed the catch perfectly!

Cartwright didn’t have the best day with the bat as he only scored 6(9) but he definitely made up in the field. His little bit of genius in the field meant the entire team was lifted, with wicket-keeper Josh Philippe also soon taking a great catch behind the stumps at the fall of the 9th wicket. And eventually, WA completed an 18-run victory and fittingly, Cartwright took the final catch as well, that of Tanveer Sangha!
The commentators on air were yelling and they even called Cartwright’s catch as the best of the tournament. And what makes it better was the timing of the catch, one that probably secured the title for them. The game was a great one for viewers and eventually, Andrew Tye was named player of the match while Matt Renshaw was named player of the tournament! See Cartwright’s catch here:

The 30-year old Cartwright has always been a brilliant fielder but proving it in a crunch situation shows how good a cricketer you are in general. He hasn’t always been able to prove his talent at the highest level but we hope to see him in yellow one day again soon.
