In the men’s game, Indians aren’t allowed to play in franchise leagues and in the women’s game, it’s only in the last couple of years that players have started getting contracts and performing outside the country. The most recent of these T20 franchise leagues was the 2021 Women’s Big Bash League which is yet to conclude but today, the WBBL 07 Awards were given out to the best players.
With around eight Indian players spread across the eight franchise teams, it was great to see them all go well in the tournament. In fact, all-rounder and India’s T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur was so good for her team that she was even named as the WBBL 07 Player of the Tournament. While doing so, she becomes the first Indian player to win this award in the WBBL history.
Usually known for her big hitting, Kaur was also very useful with the ball for her team, Melbourne Renegades. In fact, she was their undoubted best player, ending as their top run scorer and also their top wicket taker in WBBL 2021. With the bat, she grossed 399 runs at an average of 66.50 and 3 fifties, and with the ball she ended with 15 wickets and she’s not even done yet.

Her team has reached the WBBL 07 playoffs which means she plays the Challenger tomorrow and will be looking to improve on her stats this tournament. However, she was good enough to be named player of the tournament, beating the likes of Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine in the voting system.
“I think we have been looking at this for a long time and I hope, you know, sooner this women’s IPL will also start and we will also invite overseas players over there so that they can also share their experience with our domestic players. I think this is something we are really waiting for and I hope, you know, this will start,” said Harmanpreet after receiving this award.
