It’s not something that you’ll see very often in international women’s cricket but the India Women tour of England 2022 witnessed the most shocking result to the ODI series. After the hosts won the T20 series 2-1, the ODI series was a completely one-sided affair as India Women won 3-0 and the climax was the final game at Lord’s, ending on a high for multiple reasons.
For one, India W completed a very rare 3-0 whitewash in an ODI bilateral series and another reason for celebration was that it was the final game in a long and illustrious career of Indian pacer, Jhulan Goswami. She ended as the leading wicket-taker in women’s ODIs but the main reason for debate and discussion right now is the final wicket of the series which was a ‘Mankading‘ affected by Deepti Sharma.
Harmanpreet Kaur replies to question on ‘Mankading’
There’s always been a question about whether or not this ‘mankading’ style of dismissing batters is ethical and sportsmanlike. However as on date, it’s still a legal way of getting someone out. Here, Deepti Sharma ended a very long and promising 10th wicket partnership of the home team, which was causing a lot of anxiety and frustration in the Indian camp.
They built a 35-run stand for the final wicket, which kept the hopes alive in the English team. Leading the comeback was 21-year old Charlotte Dean who scored 47 and was all set to become a hero at the home of cricket, before she was dismissed at the non-striker’s end for backing up to far down. She was run out before the ball was bowled and upon reviewing it with the third umpire, she was declared out.

It’s not the most sporting way to get an opponent out but it’s still allowed, though it won’t be as per ICC’s new cricket rules which will come into effect soon. Charlie Dean walked away in tears, torn apart given the fact that she wasn’t given a chance to take her side home. And the English cricketers wouldn’t have liked the way this game ended either. That is the worst spirit of the game I’ve ever seen… #ENGvIND

We knew this would be the main point of discussion in the post match presentation and Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur was surely ready for it. When asked about it, she had a witty answer ready, telling the presenter that she was expecting him to ask about the first 10 [she meant 9] wickets to fall, as those were tough to take as well. See the chat here:

It was definitely a desperate measure from the Indian bowler and the debate is likely to continue for the next many days. We know it’s legal but is it in the right spirit of the game? Something similar happened in the IPL between Jos Buttler and Ravi Ashwin, so it’s not the first time India and England are involved in a mankading controversy. Here’s a pool we ran for our viewers as well:
Should Deepti Sharma have done that?#INDWvsENGW #ENGWvsINDW #ENGWvINDW #DeeptiSharma #CharlotteDean #Mankading
