Today, we had only one game on the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup schedule and that was New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, being played in Sydney. Everyone was tuned in to this game as it was not only the only one of the day but also because fans were starved of action as two games were washed out yesterday because of incessant rain in Melbourne.
This game was good for multiple reasons, one of them being a fantastic recovery by New Zealand, to go from 15/3 to putting up 167/7 on the board and giving themselves a great chance to go on to win the game as well. Headlining the day however was Glenn Phillips for his big hitting which led to a second career T20I century. But that wasn’t the only reason he was in the news today…
Glenn Phillips shows new way of backing up
In the final over, he was seen backing up in the most unique way – possibly the first we’ve seen of this kind in T20 cricket. This format is all about innovation and he pulled out some amazing innovation while backing up today. His style of backing up was much like a Usain Bolt or the way any 100m race runner who get set before shooting off.
For him, he needed to get on strike in the final over and got down on his haunches with his bat in the front. The minute the bowler past him, he was up and away. This style may be seen copied by many others in time to come as it seems to be a very effective one, and it allows the non-striker to get quite a few yards, while also not leaving the crease before the bowler reaches delivers the ball.

Very recently, there have been increasing talks about the spirit of the game and whether it’s alright to be out of the popping crease before the bowler delivers the ball. By doing what he did, he ensured he doesn’t leave early and everyone on social media has been full of praise for this new technique being used by Glenn Phillips. See the video here:

Former West Indian cricket Ian Bishop is someone who regularly tweets about cricket from around the world and he also spoke about this moment we witnessed. “Looks like Glenn Phillips learnt more than a thing or two from playing for the Jamaica Tallawahs in the home of Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake amongst others 🏃🏿♂️🏃🏿♂️🤣 ” he joked on Twitter.
His inning today allowed New Zealand to get to a respectable total and further, they went on to pick 4 wickets within the powerplay when they came out to defend their total. For more updates from the 2022 T20 World Cup, remember to always stay tuned to ReadScoops.com…
