Possibly one of the biggest spenders in IPL auctions in recent years, Rajasthan Royals has splurged money on players like Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Jaydev Unadkat, and others. More recently, they’ve been super happy with the performance of one overseas player in Jos Buttler. The English wicket-keeper batsman has won them a number of games at the top of the order in recent IPL seasons!
However, they received a little bit of a setback as they got to know that Buttler won’t be available for the rest of IPL 2021, which is going to resume on 19 Sep 2021 in UAE. However, T20 cricket is a fast-paced game and we move on quickly from such setbacks. Hence, Rajasthan decided to go in for a like-for-like replacement in Kiwi wicket-keeper batsman, Glenn Phillips.

Phillips has 2 fifties and a century in 25 T20 internationals for New Zealand and also a fifty in his only Test so far. However, his recent exploits and form is what has caught the eyes of the IPL selectors, with consistency across the world and formats of the game. He played the English county season where he was bowling and picking wickets too, while being super electric in the field as well.
Let’s look at his recent form at The Hundred 2021 in England, which ended yesterday. Phillips wasn’t getting the chances he needed because of a star-studded top order at Welsh Fire but he still managed to contribute. He got 80 in his last game for Welsh Fire, while scoring 30*, 8, 50 in the three games before that as well, which shows some great form in the shorter format.
As for Buttler, it’s going to be big boots to fill as he had 250+ runs in 7 games and was RR’s second highest scorer in IPL 2021 so far, only behind captain Sanju Samson. The Royals have had a poor season so far with only 3 wins in 7 games and are stuck in the mid-table battles, and they’ll be hoping Phillips makes a difference in his debut IPL season.
