South Africa vs Sri Lanka – 2nd ODI Fantasy Preview

South Africa are desperate to find their best playing eleven before the World Cup begins while Sri Lanka will be desperate to figure out some ways to win ODIs before the major 2019 ICC tournament. The 1st ODI was a point to prove for many, especially Imran Tahir who was snubbed by not getting a central contract. He immediately announced his retirement and that he will no longer be available for selection after the World Cup.

Sri Lanka put up a poor show with the bat and then they weren’t too good with the ball either, which led to the Proteas pouncing on them in the 1st ODI and completing an easy 8-wicket win with 11+ overs still in the bank. The youngsters need to step up for South Africa while the experienced players need to step up for the visitors. Keep reading for a fantasy preview of the 2nd ODI…

Stats

  • South Africa have only lost 2 of their last 10 ODIs here.
  • Sri Lanka have won 1 of their 5 ODIs here – 20% win rate.
  • 300+ scores have been achieved on 19 occasions here.
  • 392/6 is the highest score here (SA) and 319/3 is the highest successful chase (SA).
  • Quinton de Kock has 4 centuries in 8 games here – 595 runs at an average of 74.37.
  • Dale Steyn has 24 wickets in 13 matches here – no current cricketer is close to his tally at this ground.

South Africa

de Kock has a magnificent record here, with all his fifties being converted to centuries, batting at a strike rate of 111. Now his 81 in the last game means his run scoring will continue here, so I will pick him for Niroshan Dickwella who I picked in the last game, but lets leave QdK as a normal player only..

Rassie van der Dussen didn’t get much of a bat in the 1st ODI but I’ll keep him in my team, while Dale Steyn is someone I want in my fantasy team as well. As part of their experimenting, Kagiso Rabada may be rested for this game while Anrich Nortje may get another game after he managed to pick up one wicket in his last game. We’re expecting Imran Tahir to continue his wicket-taking in this game and through the series as well.

Sri Lanka

Unlike the hosts, Sri Lanka aren’t looking at too many changes in their team. In fact, I would expect them to play an unchanged side, as the team is just searching for potential match-winners or even match-changers. The youngsters have been doing well, especially Kusal Mendis who was one of the sole shining lights in the last game. He got 60 in that game, 47 in the previous one against CSA Inv XI and 84* in his last innings of the Test series.

However, the more experienced players like Lasith Malinga, Thisara Perera and Upul Tharanga need to step up if Sri Lanka have to continue their good trip to South Africa. A few early wickets from Malinga, a few boundaries at the top from Tharanga and some big hitting form Perera will help them bounce back. While most will be picking both the Kusals, I’ll be looking for a high-value selection in Oshada Fernando, who scored 49 in the 1st ODI. He won’t be in many fantasy teams.
