A month and a half after the ICC 2019 World Cup kicked off, we’re left with just the final two contenders. The warriors who fought off all other threats in this massive global competition. It’s the hosts and tournament favourites England who came through from Semi Final 2 against 5-time champions Australia, while New Zealand completed a massive upset against India the day prior to that in Semi Final 1. One thing we do know is that come Sunday 14th July, the world will see a new champion, as these teams have never lifted the World Cup before.
The English opening partnership has been unbreakable and unbeatable in this tournament, with 4 100+ opening stands. As for NZ, they have had opener woes, with their first wicket always falling in the first couple of overs. This needs to change if NZ have to win the CWC 2o19. England
It looks like even God can’t break this opening partnership and while you might be tempted to have both of Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy in your fantasy team, let’s take a moment to think of the swing bowling of Boult, Henry and Ferguson. It’s a good choice to go middle-order heavy for this game. The biggest gamble that could end up well for you here is dropping the in-form Bairstow to pick Jos Buttler in your wicket-keeper slot. Remember, Buttler scored 103 and 64 in his first two games of CWC 2019.
Joe Root has quietly crept up to almost the top of the run-scorers charts. He hasn’t had big starts like Roy and Bairstow but has contributed in every game with 2 centuries and 3 fifties so far. At this particular ground, he averages 59+ in 7 previous ODIs. You can skip Eoin Morgan as he has shown great discomfort against the short ball and NZ will exploit this weakness. With the ball, continue to show faith in Jofra Archer.
New Zealand
He has only 167 runs in 9 ODIs and had had a forgettable tournament with the bat has Martin Guptill. However, I’m going to keep backing him and adding him to all my Nostragamus (sign-up with “READSCOOPS” for Rs.100 FREE) fantasy picks. He has looked brilliant in the field and the confidence will stay high especially after the MS Dhoni run-out that brought them to the final. You can skip his opening partner Henry Nicholls, who is talented but is inexperienced and may falter at the biggest stage.
Kane Williamson is a run behind Root on the batting charts and he has been the backbone of the team, so he’s your safest fantasy player. However, there’s not a lot of other batters you can trust so I’ll go heavy on their all-rounders, especially James Neesham, who seems to be having to share a lot of the workload with the ball as well. Expect both teams to be unchanged even though Tim Southee has 6 wickets in 2 previous ODIs at Lords.
