Get your eyes off the 2019 ICC World Cup for a while and look at other cricketing series taking place across the world. We have an unlikely series between Netherlands and Zimbabwe and we also had the most unlikely result in the 1st ODI as the hosts completed a pretty simple 7-wicket win victory over Zimbabwe. It was very surprising considering Zimbabwe have been playing international cricket for many more years.
They also have a few players who have played at the highest level, including World Cups and different T20 leagues. However, they should be ready to accept this and hit back hard in the 2nd ODI. The game will be played at the same pitch and we can expect another decent scoring game where anything below 250 batting first may not be enough. Netherlands
One thing we learnt from the 1st ODI is that the Netherlands batting has improved leaps and bounds. Look at the top scorer that day and Max O’Dowd had a brilliant ODI debut with 87*. He has been a regular part of the NED team over the years and you must pick him. Another highly experienced player is Roelof van der Merwe who has played several T20 leagues around the world and also for South Africa in the past. He picked 1/57 in the last game and is handy with the bat as well.
Next picks should be the strike bowlers Paul van Meekeren and Fred Klaasen. Both these bowlers picked up 2 wickets each in the 1st ODI and Klaasen is coming off a successful season with Kent while Meekeren managed 5 wickets in 5 games at the Everest Premier League in Nepal earlier. Pick both these bowlers in your Funtasy11 (sign-up with code “6CD431“) fantasy team while Wesley Barresi is an extra batsman you can pick, easily the most experienced player in the team.
Zimbabwe
Sikandar Raza is among the best all-rounders in the world and Read Scoops had a word with him a year back; you can read the entire conversation here. Because of the top order doing well, he hasn’t been able to get too many runs off late but with the NED bowlers doing well, pick Raza and making him your captain/vice-captain isn’t a bad idea either. Another player very similar to Raza is all-rounder Sean Williams.
Now Williams becomes more valuable as he bats higher and is a slightly more experienced player, while his left-arm spinners tend to bring in a better angle to batsmen. Again, here’s another good captain/vice-captain option. He picked up 2 wickets in the 1st ODI. Brendan Taylor hit 71 in the 1st ODI and there’s no questioning this guy’s talent. Pick him for sure while Tendai Chatara may be a good option with the ball for the visitors.
