More warm-up matches will be held before we’re ready for the start of the 2020 Women’s World T20 tournament in Australia, just a couple of days away now. Now, we have hosts Australia Women getting another practice game after their first warm-up game against West Indies Women was washed out due to rain.
They will be up against South Africa Women, who also had a warm-up game yesterday itself against Sri Lanka Women. After putting up 146/5 on board after their 20 overs, SA Women completed an easy 41-run win and they come into this game high on confidence. Numbers
- Last 5 games head to head, AUS Women lead 5-0.
- So far, 3 of the 5 completed warm-ups have been abandoned.
- Meg Lanning – only 76 runs in 4 games in the recent tri-series.
- Dane van Niekerk – only 4 wickets in last 10 matches.
Australia Women
Some of these Australia Women bowlers have been doing really especially the young Tayla Vlaeminck who bagged 7 wickets in 3 games in the recent T20I tri-series with England and India Women. All 15 players can play and you’d want to pick players who need some time at the middle. One player doing well is Jess Jonassen who bagged a 5-fer in the tri-series final and is usually good with the bat too.
The side is being led by Meg Lanning and otherwise exceptionally good, she’s having a bit of a dry patch and she will want to spend some time in the middle after a below-average recent tri-series with India and England. On the other hand, someone like Delissa Kimmince will also need her confidence to be boosted, ending that tri-series with no wickets after playing 2 games in that tournament.
South Africa Women
It’s very much unlike her, but captain Dane van Niekerk hasn’t been among the wickets, neither has she been among the runs in recent games, and that’s why she’ll want time at the crease, especially after her duck in the last warm-up game. Her wife Marizanne Kapp will also want time in the middle after an injury-ridden recent series against New Zealand. She scored 44(44) in the warm-up against SL Women.
With the ball, Shabnim Ismail has also struggled with only 5 wickets in her last game and I’d give her a run, even though she didn’t bowl in the last game. Sune Luus picked 4/20 in that last warm-up games. Masabata Klaas had an expensive and wicketless last game, and picking her in my Howzat (sign-up with code “READ1234”) fantasy team makes sense even though she as only 5 wickets in her last 10 games.
