While everyone’s gotten hooked on to the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL), BCCI decided it was important to have a women’s edition as well, and that led to the formation of the 2019 Women’s T20 Challenge, or the Women’s IPL. Three teams and four games are scheduled between 6-11 May 2019, with Trailblazers winning Game 1 against Supernovas.
Led by Smriti Mandhana, Trailblazers won by just 2 runs and now they play again for a chance to book their spot in the 2019 WIPL Final. They now play Velocity led by Mithali Raj, a team which is playing for the first time. Pick both captains for your fantasy side. Captain Smriti Mandhana smashed 90(67) and showed everyone why she is India’s best batter currently. Remember, she also has the likes of Suzie Bates and Stafanie Taylor in her batting line up, who scored 1 and 2 respectively in the last game. Here, I’d drop the ever-popular Mandhana and get both these overseas stars in my team as they can be real big hitters on their day.
Another young star to watch out for is Deepti Sharma who is guaranteed to have a hit and finish her quota with the ball as well. She bagged a duck and returned with -/27 in her 4 overs but you can expect a stronger performance from her in Game 2. With the ball, Sophie Ecclestone picked 2/11 and I’ll select her over the experienced Jhulan Goswami, who went for 31 in her 3 overs including 4 fours in the last over.
Velocity
Danielle Wyatt, Hayley Matthews, Amelia Kerr and Jahanara Alam are here to back up Mithali Raj. I’ll pick Raj as a normal player while Wyatt is a must-have because she is one of the best in the world and also had a good tour of India recently followed by a good tour of Sri Lanka too. My wicket-keeper pick also comes from this team as Sushma Verma has much more experience than’s TRL’s Ravi Kalpana.
Game 1 saw 11 wickets falling, of which only 1 went to a pacer. This is an important indicator considering we’re playing on the same pitch. One spinner to include is Ekta Bisht who had 3 wickets in her 2 T20 games against England Women a couple of months back. Another must have is New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr who has 5 wickets in 3 ODIs against Australia Women recently, not forgetting runs with the bat as well.
